SEMINAR PRESENTATIONS AND PAPERS
CAVEAT: The papers and presentations linked to by this page were believed accurate
when presented, but the underlying laws, especially the tax laws, have continued to change since
the papers were written. These papers are presented as a resource -- a convenient beginning point
-- rather than a
current view of the law. Do not rely on these papers in legal matters without
consulting an attorney or otherwise confirming that the views and the
law are unchanged.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
The Contested or Nonperforming Administration: Handling the Hot Administration
Without Burning Yourself, Continuing Judicial Education Semionar, Annual State Conference
of County Judges ande Commissioners Association, 1989, College Station, Texas. This was actually the second of the 'Hot Administration' series of papers. The first was
presented to the Annual Conference of South Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association,
which as held on South Padre Island in 1988. The presentation was well received, and I was
invited to make a presentation on the same subject to the state convention. Dealing With the Contested or Nonperforming Administration: Handling the Hot
Administration Without Burning Yourself, Continuing Judicial Education Seminar, Annual Conference of South Texas
County Judges and Commissioners Association, 1993, South Padre Island, Texas An updated presentation on the same subjects as the previous paper, presented to the
regional conference in 1993. Applications of the Limited Liability Company in Estate Administration, 4th Annual Advanced Drafting: Estate Planning and Probate Seminar, State Bar of Texas, 1993,
Houston, Texas An excellent paper presented the previous year at the advanced drafting seminar by attorney
Thomas Baird is the starting point for this look at the uses of Texas Limited Liability Companies
in the administration of estates, especially where potential liability issues could present risks
to the estate. The tax rules relating to the qualification of LLCs as passthrough entities have
changed substantially since this paper was presented. Common Estates and Common Problems: An Overview of Probate Procedures, seminar and paper presented to judges-elect of Cameron County Courts at Law, 1998,
Brownsville, Texas At the invitation of the three newly elected judges of the County Courts at Law, the Cameron
County Bar Association asked me to give them an orientation on probate law and procedures. This
paper was the result. Since the jurisdiction of the statutory County Courts at Law is substantially
broader than that of the constitutional county judges, this paper is somewhat broader then the
previous papers on probate procedures. Planning Against Disability, Estate Planning Series 1999, sessions on Planning Against Disability,
and Wills & Probate, The University of Texas at Browsnville/Texas Southmost College,
1999, Brownsville, Texas This smaller paper presents some of the considerations and vehicles for planning against
disability. It was a part of a larger series of presentations. Unfortunately, the other segments
are in outline form, hence are not suitable for this medium. Handling the Hot Estate Without Burning Yourself: Common Estates and Common
Problems, Texas Association of Legal Secretaries Winter Board Meeting continuing
legal education, 2000, South Padre Island, Texas This presentation is oriented toward the experienced legal secretary or paralegal
assistant. A chapter of this presentation, edited slightly, can be viewed on the website of the
Texas Association of Legal Secretaries at
